Massachusetts Bay Colony
What religious period and political views held Massachusetts together?
Massachusetts in the colonial period
Massachusetts was founded by a group of devout English Protestants called the Puritans. The Puritans wanted to purify the Anglican Church, but instead emigrated to America for religious isolation after being persecuted in England. The colony of Massachusetts was founded by Puritans to let them practice their religion freely. Other religions were not tolerated and religion dictated everything in the colony including politics, the economy, and social values. Puritanism was the official and only religion in the colony of Massachusetts that affected every aspect of the colonists' lives.
The same religious views of all the colonists held Massachusetts together. Having the same values and religious beliefs allowed the colony to form a theocracy.
